Top US Diplomat Casts Doubts on NATO’s Purpose in Deleted Social Media Post

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau raised eyebrows with a social media post questioning the relevance of NATO, just ahead of the alliance’s annual summit. In a message later deleted, Landau responded to a thread by Matthew Whitaker, the US Ambassador to NATO, which discussed security issues in the Indo-Pacific.

Referring to Whitaker’s post, Landau wrote, “He obviously didn’t get the memo out of our Deputies Committee meeting on this very issue. NATO is still a solution in search of a problem.” His comment, posted at 6:56 p.m. on Wednesday, sparked controversy given its timing, as NATO prepares for a summit that is expected to focus on defense spending and the ongoing war in Ukraine.

State Department officials later characterized the post as a “casual, lighthearted remark” intended for a private exchange, not meant for public consumption. The spokesperson emphasized that Landau’s comments were aimed at improving NATO and ensuring the alliance stays focused on its mission.

Landau’s remarks stood in stark contrast to the views of most NATO European members, who see Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a critical threat and view the US-led alliance as vital to their defense. These comments also came as NATO leaders gear up for a two-day summit in The Hague, set to begin on June 24, where discussions are expected to include US President Donald Trump’s controversial call for NATO members to increase defense spending to 5% of their GDP.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is slated to attend the summit, as NATO continues to pledge billions in military aid to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Trump’s policies have raised concerns in Europe, particularly regarding his perceived indifference toward the alliance and his shifting stance on Russia’s actions.
