Hollywood star Tom Cruise will receive the American Film Institute’s (AFI) Life Achievement Award at a gala tribute on April 24, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The institute’s board of trustees announced the honour on Wednesday.

Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI board, praised Cruise for his enduring commitment to filmmaking, describing him as a global icon whose contributions extend beyond acting to producing and championing the theatrical cinema experience.

Four Decades on the Big Screen

Cruise rose to international prominence in the 1980s with films such as Risky Business and Top Gun, eventually becoming one of Hollywood’s most commercially successful actors.

His extensive filmography includes acclaimed titles such as Rain Man, A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire, alongside the blockbuster Mission: Impossible franchise.

His films have earned nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office. Cruise has also become known for performing many of his own demanding stunts, making practical action sequences a defining feature of several of his films.

Despite his commercial success and long career, Cruise has yet to win a competitive Academy Award. He has received three acting Oscar nominations for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. He also earned a Best Picture nomination as a producer of Top Gun: Maverick.

Recognition Beyond the Box Office

In November 2025, Cruise received an honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards in recognition of his contributions to filmmaking and his longstanding advocacy for the theatrical moviegoing experience.

More recently, he returned to the screen in Digger, directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film marks a departure from the action-heavy roles that have defined much of Cruise’s career.

Established in 1973, the AFI Life Achievement Award recognises individuals whose work has made a lasting contribution to the art of cinema.

Previous recipients include Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman and Eddie Murphy, who received the honour in 2026.

Proceeds from the 2027 ceremony will support the institute’s educational and artistic programmes, which focus on preserving cinema’s heritage and nurturing future generations of filmmakers.
