Thrown Under Bus, Taken Miles Away: New Twists in Delhi BMW Crash
A Sunday afternoon drive back from Delhi’s Bangla Sahib Gurdwara turned into tragedy for 56-year-old Navjot Singh, deputy secretary in the finance ministry’s economic affairs department, and his wife Sandeep Kaur.
Their motorcycle was hit by a speeding BMW on Ring Road near Dhaula Kuan around 1.30–2 pm, throwing the couple onto the path of a moving bus. Singh died of his injuries, while Kaur remains in critical condition.
The BMW, driven by Gagan Preet Makkad with her husband Parikshit Makkar as passenger, crashed into a divider and overturned. The couple later hailed a taxi and, along with a passerby, rushed the victims to a hospital—22 km away in Azadpur—where Singh succumbed.
Police said three emergency calls were received about the crash. Videos circulating online showed the victims lying on the road near a metro pillar, with the overturned BMW nearby, though their authenticity is unverified.
On Monday, Makkad was arrested after being discharged from the hospital. She faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, endangering lives, and obstruction of evidence.
Family’s Allegation
Relatives of the deceased alleged that the accused deliberately took the victims to a small, distant hospital instead of a nearby facility. In her FIR statement, Kaur said she pleaded with Makkad to take them to a closer hospital, but was ignored. “My husband was unconscious and needed immediate treatment. He could have been saved if we had reached on time,” she told police.
Van driver Mohammad Gulfam, who transported all four injured persons, supported the claim. “Many bystanders were busy recording videos instead of helping. The woman insisted we go to Azadpur hospital,” he told PTI.
A police official also said the accused’s father is acquainted with one of the hospital’s owners, raising further questions about the choice of facility.
