SonyLIV’s gripping new political thriller The Hunt: The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Case has been hit by piracy within hours of its release. The eight-episode series, which premiered on July 4, 2025, was illegally uploaded to multiple torrent websites, severely undermining the platform’s exclusive distribution.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor, the series delves into the 90-day investigation following the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. The story is anchored by a group of investigators racing against time, political pressures, and misinformation in pursuit of the truth.
Starring Amit Sial, Danish Iqbal, Amit Verma, and Bhagavathi Perumal, the series has received strong early reviews for its gripping narrative, historical depth, and performances. However, the leak has caused serious concern among the show’s creators and SonyLIV executives.
Digital piracy continues to pose a major threat to OTT content in India, especially when it comes to politically sensitive and high-budget series. While the platform has reportedly taken legal steps to issue takedown notices, the damage in terms of revenue and viewership has already begun.
Industry experts have urged streaming services and production houses to implement stronger anti-piracy measures, including encrypted preview systems and tighter release protocols. SonyLIV is expected to issue an official statement soon regarding the breach and how it intends to prevent future leaks.
Despite the setback, The Hunt is expected to perform well on the platform due to growing interest in political thrillers and true-event narratives. The leak, however, is a reminder that the battle against piracy is far from over in the digital age.
