The Honeymoon Trap: Sonam Raghuvanshi’s Chilling Strategy to Kill Her Husband
Sonam Raghuvanshi, a woman from Indore, has been accused of orchestrating the murder of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. According to investigators, Sonam allegedly lured Raja with a promise to consummate their marriage only after visiting the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati — a plan that reportedly masked her deeper motive to end the marriage and pursue an affair with her father’s employee, Raj Kushwaha.
The couple married on May 11 in Indore and began their honeymoon on May 20, arriving in Meghalaya via Guwahati. Three days later, on May 23, they went missing in the East Khasi Hills district after checking out of a homestay in Nongriat village.
Police say Sonam convinced her husband that they must first offer prayers at the Kamakhya Devi Temple before becoming intimate. This delay allowed her to set the stage for what would become a premeditated murder.
On June 2, Raja’s body was discovered in a deep gorge near the Weisawdong Falls. Sonam remained untraceable until June 9, when she resurfaced under mysterious circumstances in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.
Investigators allege that Sonam led Raja into the dense jungles of Nongriat, believing that the remoteness would make it easier for the hired killers to carry out the plan. However, a surge in tourist activity on May 22 and 23 reportedly disrupted the initial attempt.
Eventually, the assailants killed Raja near Weisawdong Falls and dumped his body into the gorge, police said.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed that the contract killers arrived in Guwahati on May 21, purchased a machete near their hotel, and then traveled by road to Shillong. Sonam, meanwhile, stayed in constant communication with her lover Raj, who allegedly coordinated the killing.
“Sonam was present when her husband was murdered,” a senior Meghalaya police official told PTI. “She fled the scene, taking a taxi from Mawkdok to Shillong, and later hired a cab to Guwahati. To avoid detection, she boarded multiple trains en route to her next destination. Though she claims to have returned directly to Indore, we are still verifying that.”
In a further twist, Sonam’s brother, Govind, has publicly stated his belief that she is guilty. He also revealed that her alleged lover, Raj Kushwah, had once been treated like a brother, saying, “He used to call her elder sister, and she tied a rakhi to him every Raksha Bandhan.”
The investigation is ongoing, with police continuing to trace Sonam’s movements and establish the full extent of the conspiracy.
