Tesla Launches First India Showroom in Mumbai; Model Y Priced from ₹60 Lakh
Tesla has made its long-awaited entry into the Indian market with the launch of its Model Y electric SUV, starting at ₹60.1 lakh (around $70,000). The U.S. EV giant opened its first showroom today at the upscale Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marking a major milestone in its global expansion.
The minimalist showroom, featuring Tesla’s signature black logo against a white backdrop, showcased a partially veiled Model Y behind glass panels, attracting curious onlookers and media attention.
Speaking at the launch event, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis extended an open invitation to Tesla to set up R&D and manufacturing units in the state.
“Tesla is not just a car company—it’s a symbol of design, innovation, and sustainability. We’d like Maharashtra to be a partner in Tesla’s India journey,” said Fadnavis.
He highlighted Mumbai’s position as not only India’s financial capital but also a hub for entrepreneurship and green innovation.
Tesla Pricing in India
Tesla will initially offer two variants of the Model Y:
-
Rear-Wheel Drive – ₹60.1 lakh (~$70,000)
-
Long Range (AWD) – ₹67.8 lakh (~$79,000)
The steep pricing is largely due to India’s high import duties, which significantly inflate the cost compared to other countries:
-
U.S.: ₹38.6 lakh ($44,990)
-
China: ₹30.5 lakh ($36,700)
-
Germany: ₹46 lakh ($53,700)
Despite the premium pricing, Tesla is aiming to tap into India’s growing luxury EV segment, which is currently dominated by players like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
India’s EV Push
India is targeting 30% EV penetration by 2030, up from just 4% currently, and is rolling out incentives to attract global automakers. While Tesla’s launch is symbolic and strategic, experts say its success will depend on how quickly it can localize production and make models more accessible to Indian consumers.
Tesla’s entry signals a turning point in India’s EV landscape—and a high-voltage start to what could be a transformative decade for the country’s auto industry.
