Tejashwi Yadav Declared Mahagathbandhan’s Chief Ministerial Candidate for Bihar Assembly Elections

After weeks of speculation and internal wrangling, the Opposition’s INDIA bloc, or Mahagathbandhan, in Bihar has officially declared Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming assembly elections. The announcement came on Thursday, with many analysts noting that Tejashwi was always the obvious choice.

In a symbolic gesture of unity, Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) chief Mukesh Sahani was named the deputy chief ministerial candidate, signaling an end to weeks of public discord within the alliance.

Formal Announcement
The decision was made public at a joint press conference in Patna, attended by former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, deputed by the Congress as its troubleshooter, alongside Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi, and Tejashwi himself.

“All allies in the INDIA bloc, including our leader Rahul Gandhi, have decided that Tejashwi will be our CM face and we will fight the election unitedly. The decision has been taken after consultation with all allies and our president Mallikarjun Kharge,” Gehlot said, ending months of speculation.

Tejashwi: The Inevitable Choice
Tejashwi Yadav’s rise to the CM candidate post was widely seen as inevitable. Having led the alliance in 2020, when it narrowly missed forming the government, he maintained his primacy despite delays and negotiations within the Congress. His coordination with VIP chief Mukesh Sahani helped smooth out alliance tensions.

Learning from 2020
In the 2020 assembly elections, the Mahagathbandhan fell short of a majority by just 12 seats, with the RJD emerging as the single-largest party with 75 seats. That near-win cemented Tejashwi’s reputation as a decisive campaigner, focusing on jobs, youth, and welfare, moving beyond his image as a dynastic politician.

Political Journey and Resilience
Tejashwi’s political career began 15 years ago, transitioning from a member of the Delhi Daredevils IPL squad to a deputy CM in Nitish Kumar’s government in 2015. Despite Nitish switching alliances, Tejashwi emerged as a strong opposition leader, championing employment and governance issues while challenging the NDA’s record.

Controversies and Legal Challenges
Tejashwi is no stranger to legal scrutiny. He faces multiple criminal cases, including a 2017 CBI case over alleged IRCTC hotel contract irregularities during his father Lalu Prasad Yadav’s ministerial tenure, a 2022 case related to land-for-jobs allegations, and a 2020 murder case alongside his brother Tej Pratap Yadav. His election affidavit disclosed 11 criminal cases, encompassing charges of conspiracy, cheating, forgery, and offences under anti-corruption and money-laundering laws.

Despite these controversies, Tejashwi has consolidated his position within the RJD, with his siblings Tej Pratap Yadav and Misa Bharti pursuing their own political paths, leaving him firmly in command of the party’s strategy and direction.

Thursday’s announcement signals a united opposition front as Bihar heads into a critical assembly election, with Tejashwi Yadav positioned as the face of the Mahagathbandhan’s bid to unseat Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after four consecutive terms.
