Tejas Crash: Wg Cdr Namansh Syal Receives Heartbreaking Farewell from IAF Officer Wife, Honoured with Gun Salute
Wing Commander Namansh Syal was cremated with full military honours in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district on Sunday, as his wife, Wing Commander Afshan — also an Indian Air Force officer — bid him a heartbreaking farewell while holding their six-year-old daughter close.
Syal’s cousin lit the funeral pyre as IAF personnel, officials, political leaders and hundreds of locals gathered to pay tribute to the officer they fondly called “Nammu.”
The 34-year-old pilot died on Friday, November 21, when a Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Mk-1) crashed during an aerobatic event at the Dubai Airshow. He is survived by his wife, their daughter, and his parents.
A Heartbreaking Final Salute
In visuals shared by ANI, Wing Commander Afshan was seen standing in uniform, eyes filled with tears, as she offered her final salute to her husband. IAF personnel accorded Wing Commander Syal a gun salute as his mortal remains arrived in his native village, Patialkar.
Villagers turned out in large numbers to see him one last time. The IAF described Syal as a “dedicated fighter pilot” and a “thorough professional” known for his unwavering commitment and exceptional flying skills.
The Dubai Airshow Tragedy
The fatal crash occurred during a routine aerobatic display at the Dubai Airshow — one of the world’s largest aviation events, featuring delegations from more than 150 countries. Footage from the final day shows the Tejas aircraft suddenly nosediving before bursting into flames and sending thick smoke billowing across the runway.
A court of inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause of the crash.
Syal, an alumnus of Sainik School Sujanpur Tira, was commissioned into the Indian Air Force in December 2009 and had built a reputation as a skilled and dependable fighter pilot.
Condolences From Across India
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep grief over the officer’s death. Several public figures, including actor Kamal Haasan, also paid tribute, calling him “a brave son of India taken far too soon.”
