Strong Earthquake Jolts Delhi-NCR; Epicentre in Haryana’s Jhajjar

Residents across Delhi-NCR felt strong tremors on Thursday morning after a 4.4 magnitude earthquake struck Haryana’s Jhajjar at around 9:04 AM, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The quake’s epicentre, located 10 km below the surface, lies roughly 60 km from Delhi and falls within the National Capital Region.

Tremors were reported in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and Faridabad. “My vehicle shook—it was really strong,” an eyewitness told ANI. Another resident in Ghaziabad said it felt like “someone was shaking the entire shop.”

Why Is Delhi Prone to Earthquakes?

Delhi lies in Seismic Zone IV, indicating a “fairly high” risk of earthquakes. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority attributes the region’s seismic activity to the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge, a major geological fault line. While Delhi typically experiences quakes in the 5–6 magnitude range, occasional tremors can reach 7–8 magnitude, posing significant risk due to the region’s dense population and infrastructure.
