Spain Announces €615 Million Military Aid Package for Ukraine
Spain will provide Ukraine with a new €615 million ($710 million) military aid package to support its ongoing defense against Russia’s invasion, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference in Madrid alongside visiting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Sánchez said that roughly €300 million of the package will be allocated for “new defense equipment.”
“Your fight is ours,” Sánchez declared, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of pursuing “neo-imperialism” aimed at undermining the European project and its core values.
The announcement followed the signing of several bilateral agreements between the two leaders, including initiatives to counter Russian disinformation.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers have been killed, millions displaced, and vast areas of Ukraine left in ruins.
Earlier in the day, Sánchez and Zelensky toured Madrid’s Reina Sofía Museum to view Pablo Picasso’s famed anti-war painting Guernica. In April 2022, shortly after the invasion began, Zelensky likened Russia’s aggression to the 1937 Nazi bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
Zelensky, who met French officials in Paris on Monday, is set to travel to Türkiye on Wednesday for renewed peace discussions involving Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.
