South Calcutta Law College Gangrape: Main Accused Monojit Mishra Sought Help from Mentors After Crime, Say Police

A day after the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old student at South Calcutta Law College, the prime accused Monojit Mishra attempted to contact several of his so-called “mentors” for help, Kolkata Police officials said on Saturday.

The revelation comes as investigators continue to probe the June 25 assault, in which four individuals associated with the college — Monojit Mishra, students Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20), and security guard Pinaki Banerjee (55) — have been arrested and remain in police custody.

Monojit’s Movements After the Crime

According to police, Monojit traveled across several South Kolkata neighbourhoods — including Rashbehari, Deshapriya Park, Gariahat, Fern Road, and Ballygunge Station Road — the day after the crime, allegedly seeking help from people he considered influential. Mobile tower data also placed him near Karaya police station during this period.

One of the people he approached, a reportedly “influential” individual in Deshapriya Park, refused to assist after learning the nature of the crime, and advised Monojit to “back off,” police sources said.

“He reached out to multiple people, hoping someone would help him. But at least one person he approached firmly declined after understanding the gravity of the situation,” an officer told PTI.

Pre-planned Crime and Coordinated Movements

Investigators believe the attack was pre-meditated, citing Call Detail Records (CDRs) that show frequent communication between Monojit, Zaib, and Pramit in the days leading up to June 25. Police say this points to a coordinated plan.

On the night of the assault, the three allegedly raped the student inside the security guard’s room on campus. The guard, Pinaki Banerjee, was instructed to wait outside while the crime took place. After the incident, the accused reportedly stayed on campus drinking alcohol.

“They consumed alcohol in the same room and told the security guard to keep quiet about what had happened,” the officer added.

Later that night, the trio allegedly went to a dhaba on EM Bypass for dinner, returning to their homes the following morning as if nothing had occurred.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are continuing to question witnesses and analyze forensic and digital evidence to build a comprehensive case.
