Shubman Gill Released from India’s Squad Ahead of 2nd Test Against South Africa in Guwahati
India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa after failing to recover from the neck spasm he suffered during the series opener at Eden Gardens. The 26-year-old, who had travelled to Guwahati in hopes of proving his fitness, has now returned to Mumbai to rest and focus on recovery. With Gill sidelined, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will lead India in the must-win Test as the hosts look to level the two-match series.
A senior BCCI official confirmed Gill’s release from the squad, telling PTI: “Gill has been released from the squad. He will be working on his recovery.”
Speaking on the eve of the match, stand-in skipper Pant said Gill was desperate to play but was advised to prioritise his health. “Shubman was keen to play. He showed resilience even when the body was not permitting,” Pant told reporters.
Gill’s injury occurred in the first Test when he attempted a sweep off Simon Harmer and immediately clutched the back of his neck. After brief on-field treatment, he retired hurt and was later taken to hospital. He did not bat in the second innings, and India fell short by 30 runs while chasing 124.
Although discharged earlier this week and transported to Guwahati separately, Gill was eventually ruled out following assessments. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had hinted that a call would be taken later, but the team has decided not to risk him for the Guwahati Test.
Nitish Kumar Reddy Joins Squad
All-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, released for the first Test, has rejoined the squad ahead of the second match. Gill’s absence could see Dhruv Jurel promoted to No. 4 in the batting order.
The injury comes after an intense year for Gill, who has been playing continuous cricket since the Champions Trophy in February. It is still unclear whether he will recover in time for the three-match ODI series against South Africa starting November 30 in Ranchi.
