Shreyas Iyer’s Life Was in Danger After Rib Injury; BCCI Medical Team’s Swift Action ‘Saved Him’: Report
India ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was admitted to a Sydney hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after sustaining a life-threatening injury during the third and final ODI against Australia on Saturday.
The 29-year-old suffered a serious blow to his left rib cage while taking a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey at the Sydney Cricket Ground, leading to internal bleeding. According to reports, the BCCI medical team’s swift diagnosis and immediate intervention on the field saved his life.
BCCI confirms spleen injury
In a statement released Monday, the BCCI said scans revealed a “laceration injury to the spleen.”
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage… He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well,” the release said.
The board added that its medical team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his progress. The team doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee his recovery.
‘Your timely action saved a life’
According to Dainik Jagran, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, head of the ICC Medical Committee and the BCCI Medical Panel, reviewed Iyer’s medical reports and praised the team’s quick response. In a four-point email to the BCCI, he wrote:
“Last but not least, congratulations to the medical team on the ground. Your timely diagnosis and immediate action saved a life.”
Iyer collapsed after fielding
A PTI report said Iyer collapsed in the dressing room after returning from the field, with his vital signs dropping sharply. The team doctor and physio immediately rushed him to the hospital.
“Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon,” a team source said.
Stable and out of ICU
Cricbuzz reported Monday evening that Iyer has been moved out of the ICU and is now out of danger. Friends are with him in Sydney, and a family member is expected to arrive from Mumbai once visa formalities are completed.
The incident has shocked the cricket community, with messages of support pouring in for Iyer as he continues his recovery in Sydney.
