Shiv Sena MLA Justifies Assault on Canteen Worker Over ‘Stale Food’, Says He Has No Regrets

Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, from the Eknath Shinde-led faction, has sparked outrage after a video went viral showing him assaulting a canteen employee at the MLA Hostel in Mumbai. Gaikwad defended his actions by claiming the food served was stale and foul-smelling, and said he plans to raise the issue during the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly.

The video shows Gaikwad abusing the canteen operator, refusing to pay the bill, and slapping a staff member at the billing counter. He is also seen pushing and threatening others, urging people present not to pay for the meal.

The incident took place late Tuesday night after Gaikwad ordered dal-rice to his room, which he claimed was spoiled. Enraged, he stormed into the canteen and turned violent.

Speaking to PTI, Gaikwad remained unapologetic.

“When someone fails to understand democratic language, then I have to [use] this language only,” he said, defending the assault.

He also distanced himself from regional language politics, saying:

“I didn’t thrash him seeing whether he is Marathi or Hindi-speaking. I had complained to concerned authorities on several occasions. I will repeat it.”

🔹 Past Controversy Resurfaces

Political opponents, particularly the Congress, have recalled Gaikwad’s previous controversy — his 2023 announcement of an ₹11 lakh reward for anyone who cut off Rahul Gandhi’s tongue over remarks on reservations.

The latest incident has reignited criticism of growing political impunity and use of violence by elected representatives, with calls for action mounting from opposition leaders and civil society groups.
