Severe rain threat hangs over India–Pakistan T20 World Cup clash in Colombo

India’s marquee T20 World Cup encounter with Pakistan at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday faces the possibility of weather disruptions, with Sri Lankan meteorologists warning of unsettled conditions.

Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology said a low-pressure system could form over the Bay of Bengal, potentially triggering showers around match time.

“A low-pressure area is likely to form over the south-eastern Bay of Bengal around 15th February,” the department said in a statement.

Forecasts from AccuWeather suggest a 70–80% chance of rain in Colombo’s Khettarama area through the day. While the risk is expected to ease slightly by evening, intermittent showers could still delay the start or lead to a shortened contest.

The Colombo venue, however, is equipped with full-ground covers, allowing play to resume quickly once rain stops — typically within about 20 minutes.

Abhishek Sharma’s fitness under watch

India are also monitoring the fitness of Abhishek Sharma, who missed the Namibia fixture after an infection that required hospitalisation. In his absence, Sanju Samson opened alongside Ishan Kishan, but the stand-in combination failed to convert a promising start.

Team management sources indicated that Abhishek’s availability remains uncertain, with a final decision likely closer to the match following medical evaluation.

Pandya’s record boosts India

All eyes will also be on Hardik Pandya, whose all-round contributions have historically troubled Pakistan. Pandya has scored 315 runs in 12 innings against the rivals at an average of 35 and a strike rate above 126, including two half-centuries. With the ball, he has claimed 25 wickets at an average of 18.60, with best figures of 3/8.

India will additionally rely on Kishan’s aggressive approach at the top as they hope favourable weather and improved fitness fortunes strengthen their chances in the high-voltage clash.
