That apart, US President Donald Trump also moved to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook on allegations that she falsified documents on mortgage applications, hitting investor sentiment. Besides, he has threatened to place export curbs on chips in retaliation against other nations’ digital services taxes.

Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, BEL, Adani Ports, Bharti Airtel, Power Grid, Tata Motors, HDFC Bank, NTPC, Axis Bank, and Trent were the top Sensex losers today.

In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap index fell 1 per cent and the Nifty SmallCap index dipped 1.4 per cent.

Among sectors, the Nifty Realty index was the top loser, down 1.6 per cent. This was followed by losses in the Nifty Pharma index (down 1.4 per cent), the Nifty Metal index (1 per cent), and the Nifty PSU Bank index (1 per cent).

On the upside, only the Nifty FMCG index and Nifty Auto were bucking the weak trend.
