SENSEX rises 221 points, NIFTY50 at 24,790 as auto, metal stocks rally; JSW Steel, Tata Steel lead gains
Indian equity benchmarks opened higher on Monday, September 8, following gains in Asian markets.
At 9:23 AM, the S&P BSE Sensex rose 220.72 points, or 0.27%, to 80,931.48, while the Nifty50 gained 48.95 points, or 0.20%, to 24,789.95. Broader indices also traded up, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 rising 0.24% and 0.11%, respectively.
Sector Performance
All sectors except Nifty Consumer Durables (-0.15%) were in positive territory. Nifty Metal (1.2%) led gains, followed by Nifty Auto (1.19%) and Nifty PSU Bank (0.85%).
Foreign and Domestic Flows
On Friday, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹1,304.91 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth ₹1,821.23 crore. FIIs have pulled out ₹12,257 crore from Indian equities in the first week of September, impacted by a stronger dollar, US tariff concerns, and ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Global Markets
Asian markets opened higher on Monday amid US payroll data and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.28%, Shanghai Composite was up 0.17%, South Korea’s KOSPI gained 0.19%, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 jumped 1.41%.
In the US, Wall Street ended marginally lower on Friday. Dow Jones fell 220.43 points (0.48%) to 45,400.86, S&P 500 slipped 20.58 points (0.32%) to 6,481.50, and Nasdaq Composite was down 7.31 points (0.03%) to 21,700.39.
