Sensex down 500 pts; Nifty near 25,550; VIX up 5%; RIL, ICICI Bank down 3% each

Indian stock markets were trading sharply lower on Monday, dragged by selling pressure in RIL, ICICI Bank, Wipro, Tata Motors PV, and Cipla shares.

Global market mood, too, remained cautious after US President Donald Trump vowed to levy tax on European countries as they opposed his plans to acquire Greenland.

The BSE Sensex index traded around 82,950 levels, falling 620 points or 0.74 per cent, while the Nifty50 was at 25,507, dropping 187 points or 0.73 per cent.

Individually, Wirpo shares tanked over 9 per cent after the IT company’s Q3 consolidated profit declined 7 per cent Y-o-Y to ₹3,119 crore. Besides, Wipro’s Q4 guidance of 0-2 per cent quarter-on-quarter (Q-o-Q) constant currency (CC) growth fell short of expectations, signalling ongoing demand softness, fewer working days, and delays in deal ramp-ups. Reliance Industries (RIL) shares declined 2.2 per cent after the company reported a 1.6-per cent Y-o-Y rise in consolidated net profit to ₹22,290 crore in Q3FY26. RIL’s Q3 revenue grew 10 per cent to ₹2.93 trillion, Ebitda 6.1 per cent to ₹50,932 crore, and margin contracted to 17.3 per cent from 18 per cent Y-o-Y.

ICICI Bank shares, too, dropped 3 per cent on in-line Q3Y26 results. The lender’s Q3 profit fell 4 per cent Y-o-Y to ₹11,317.9 crore as provisions more than doubled to ₹2,555.6 crore.

HDFC Bank share price, on the other hand, was down just 0.3 per cent after the lender’s Q3 standalone profit climbed 11.5 per cent Y-o-Y to ₹18,653.8 crore, with NII up 6.4 per cent at ₹32,615 crore.

M&M, Bharti Airtel, Cipla, Sun Pharma, L&T, Tata Motors PV, Dr Reddy’s Labs, Infosys, Eicher Motors, and Max Health were some of the other top losers on the Nifty index.

On the contrary, IndiGo, Tech M, Axis Bank, HUL, Kotak Bank, BEL, Trent, Jio Fin, and HDFC Life wre the top gainers.

In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap index slipped 0.53 per cent, and the Nifty SmallCap index 0.64 per cent.

Among sectors, the Nifty Pharma index edged 0.6 per cent lower, the Nifty IT 0.5 per cent, and the Nifty Auto 0.4 per cent.

On the upside, the Nifty Metal index gained 0.24 per cent.
