Sensex down 400 pts; Nifty IT, metal, pharma slip over 1%; SMIDs fall
The benchmark Indian equity indices continued to trade lower on Friday, for the sixth consecutive session. The headline indices slipped today after US President Donald Trump announced a 100 per cent tariff on “any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product” entering the country from October 1, 2025.
Additionally, he announced a 25 per cent duty on heavy trucks and a 50 per cent levy on kitchen cabinets and associated products.
At 11:33 AM, the BSE Sensex was at 80,763, down 397 points or 0.49 per cent, while the NSE Nifty50 was trading lower by 134 points or 0.54 per cent at 24,757.
On the BSE, Sun Pharma was the top loser, followed by Tata Steel and Tech Mahindra. On the flipside, L&T, Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki were among the gainers.
Broader markets, too, fell. Nifty MidCap 100 index dropped 1.08 per cent, while Nifty SmallCap 100 index tanked 1.52 per cent.
Sectorally, the Nifty Pharma index plunged on 100 per cent tariffs imposed on branded, patented drug imports by Donald Trump. The index was down over 2 per cent.
