Sanju Samson’s Blitz Puts Asia Cup Opening Spot Under Spotlight, Adds Pressure on Gill
Sanju Samson continued his blistering form in the Kerala Cricket League, smashing 83 off 41 balls for Kochi Blue Tigers against Alleppey Ripples on Sunday. The swashbuckling opener hit 9 sixes and 2 fours, guiding his team to a successful chase of 177 runs and marking his fourth consecutive fifty-plus score in the tournament.
With 368 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 186.80, Samson is currently second on the season’s highest run-scorers list, making a strong case for inclusion in India’s Asia Cup XI. His recent form has reignited debates over the opening slot alongside Shubman Gill, who is likely to retain the position as vice-captain, while Abhishek Sharma offers an additional spin option.
Despite his domestic dominance, Samson may have to adapt to a middle-order role to secure a place in the team, given limited opportunities in that position.
India will open their Asia Cup campaign against the UAE on September 10 in Dubai, with the high-profile clash against Pakistan on September 14, followed by the final group stage match against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
