Sachin Tendulkar Denies Rumours of Becoming Next BCCI President

Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday dismissed speculation linking him to the role of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president. Reports had suggested the former India batter could replace Roger Binny, who stepped down earlier this year after crossing the board’s age limit of 70.

In a statement, Tendulkar’s management firm, SRT Sports Management Pvt Ltd, clarified:
“It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). We categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations.”

With Binny’s exit, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla is serving as acting president until elections at the Annual General Meeting on September 28. Reports had claimed that Tendulkar might be approached as a consensus candidate, further fuelled by a Dainik Jagran report suggesting a legendary former India cricketer was under consideration.

The trend of former players heading the BCCI began with Sourav Ganguly in 2019, followed by Binny. However, Tendulkar has never held an administrative post. Under BCCI rules, a state association must nominate a candidate for office-bearer positions, even if the individual is a former India player.

Tendulkar, widely regarded as the greatest batter in cricket history, still holds the record for most runs in both Tests and ODIs, along with the highest number of Test centuries. His ODI century record was overtaken by Virat Kohli during the 2023 World Cup.
