Russian Drone and Missile Barrage Hits Kyiv, Injures 16 in Overnight Assault
Waves of Russian drones and missiles pounded Kyiv early Tuesday in one of the most prolonged and intense attacks in recent weeks, injuring at least 16 people and causing fires and damage across multiple districts, local officials said.
Air raid sirens blared for over seven hours as explosions echoed across the Ukrainian capital. Witnesses reported drones buzzing overhead and the distinct sound of missiles streaking through the sky. The Solomianskyi district, near the city center, was hit particularly hard, with damage to the upper floors of a residential building and several non-residential structures.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the majority of injuries occurred in Solomianskyi, including the death of a 62-year-old U.S. citizen who died in a nearby dwelling. Details surrounding the cause of death remain unclear.
“This was a very difficult night,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration. He confirmed 12 strikes across five districts, including one that hit a kindergarten in eastern Kyiv. “The capital is under a combined attack. Russia is using both drones and missiles. Fires have broken out in several areas, and emergency services are actively responding.”
Power outages were reported in some neighborhoods as emergency crews scrambled to contain the damage. In total, multiple waves of drones reportedly targeted Kyiv’s infrastructure and residential zones.
Attacks Extend Beyond Kyiv
Other regions of Ukraine also came under fire, including the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, where local authorities reported at least four separate strikes.
Despite intermittent negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in recent weeks—focused mainly on prisoner exchanges and the return of fallen soldiers—no significant diplomatic breakthroughs have occurred. The ongoing conflict has now entered its fourth year with no end in sight.
Ukraine Accuses Russia of Targeting Civilians
Andriy Yermak, chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelensky, condemned the attack as part of Russia’s continued assault on civilians. “More strikes by Russian drones on residential buildings in Kyiv,” he wrote on Telegram. “Russia is continuing its war on civilians.”
Russian Capital Also Targeted
Meanwhile, in Moscow, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that Russian air defenses had intercepted two Ukrainian drones attempting to strike the city. The attempted attack led to brief closures of Moscow’s airports, though no damage or casualties were reported.
