Russian Airstrike on Kyiv Injures Five, Says Ukrainian Military

A Russian air assault on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, left five people injured, according to Ukrainian military officials on Monday. The early morning attack involved a barrage of missiles and drones, triggering air raid sirens across the city and forcing residents into shelters.

Ukraine’s air defense systems were activated, and several incoming threats were reportedly intercepted. However, falling debris from downed projectiles caused damage in multiple districts, injuring civilians and damaging residential buildings and vehicles, officials said.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed the injuries and said emergency services were working at the affected sites. “There were explosions in several parts of the city. All relevant services are on the ground,” he wrote on Telegram.

The strike comes amid an escalation in Russia’s aerial campaign against Ukrainian cities, with recent attacks also targeting infrastructure in Odesa, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. Ukraine’s military has vowed to strengthen its air defenses and has urged Western allies to expedite the delivery of additional systems.

Moscow has not commented on the latest strike, but it has previously claimed its attacks are aimed at military and strategic targets — a claim Kyiv and Western governments routinely reject, pointing to civilian casualties and widespread damage to non-military infrastructure.
