Russia ships India’s fourth S-400 air defence system, set for deployment by May-end
On the eve of Operation Sindoor’s anniversary, India is set to receive its fourth S-400 air defence system from Russia, with delivery expected at an Indian port by mid-May. The fifth system, which reportedly played a key role during Operation Sindoor, is likely to be shipped in November.
The government has also cleared the acquisition of five additional S-400 units, capable of targeting aerial threats at ranges of up to 400 km — covering areas deep across the Pakistan border.
According to sources, pre-dispatch inspection by the Indian Air Force was completed by April 18, and the system has already been shipped. The incoming unit is expected to be deployed in the Rajasthan sector to bolster air defence coverage.
India is also planning to procure around 280 S-400 missiles to replenish stocks used during Operation Sindoor and build reserves. During the operation, it is estimated that multiple long-range missiles were fired against Pakistani aerial assets.
The S-400’s presence reportedly forced Pakistan to reposition key air assets to bases such as Quetta and Peshawar to avoid exposure.
Looking ahead, the fifth system may be deployed along the China-facing sector, while India is exploring setting up a maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility domestically with possible technology transfer.
To further strengthen air defence, India is also considering procuring at least 12 Pantsir air defence system units through a government-to-government deal, along with plans to manufacture additional systems under the “Make in India” initiative.
