Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo in Tears During Tribute to Diogo Jota at FIFA Club World Cup
Portugal internationals Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo were overcome with emotion and broke down in tears during a moment of silence held for Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup quarterfinal between Al Hilal and Fluminense.
The heartbreaking deaths of Jota and Silva sent shockwaves through the football community. As the tribute took place at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, Neves and Cancelo—both representing Al Hilal—were seen visibly emotional, mourning the loss of their close friend and national teammate. The three had shared recent triumphs together, including Portugal’s UEFA Nations League victory.
Speaking before the match, Al Hilal head coach Simone Inzaghi acknowledged the emotional toll the tragedy had taken on his players.
“We all know it’s a sad day because of what happened to Diogo and Andre,” said Inzaghi. “These are tragedies that should never happen. Ruben and Joao were very close to them. It’s been a difficult day—training, preparation, everything felt different.”
Al Hilal Exit Club World Cup After Brave Run
Despite their emotional struggles, Al Hilal took to the pitch but were narrowly defeated 2-1 by Brazilian side Fluminense. Super-sub Hercules netted for the second consecutive game, sending the Copa Libertadores champions through to the semifinals.
Al Hilal’s campaign ended in the quarterfinals, but not without leaving a mark. The Saudi giants had earlier stunned the world with a dramatic 4-3 extra-time win over Manchester City and held Real Madrid to a draw in the group stage. Their spirited performances earned widespread praise and elevated their global profile.
Fluminense now await the winner of the other quarterfinal clash between Palmeiras and Chelsea, raising the prospect of an all-Brazilian semifinal showdown.
