Republicans Push Trump’s Sweeping ‘Big Beautiful’ Bill Through Congress Ahead of July 4

Republicans delivered a major legislative victory to President Donald Trump on Thursday, passing his sweeping “Big Beautiful” bill just in time for Independence Day. The President is expected to sign the nearly 900-page measure into law at a ceremony on July 4.

The legislation includes an expansive package of tax cuts, deep spending reductions, and key conservative priorities ranging from immigration enforcement to defence expansion. The bill passed the Senate with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. The House, which had narrowly approved an earlier version in May, cleared the final bill with a close 218–214 margin.

Key Features of Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful’ Bill

$4.5 Trillion in Tax Cuts

The centerpiece of the legislation is approximately $4.5 trillion in tax reductions. The child tax credit would increase from $2,000 to $2,200, although millions of low-income families would not receive the full amount.

New temporary deductions include write-offs for tips, overtime pay, and auto loan interest. Seniors earning under $75,000 would qualify for a $6,000 deduction, part of Trump’s effort to eliminate taxes on Social Security benefits.

Rollback of Clean Energy Incentives

The bill reverses many green energy tax breaks established under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. Consumer incentives for electric vehicles, energy-efficient appliances, and home insulation upgrades would be eliminated.

It also shuts down the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which supported local pollution-cutting projects through nonprofit financing.

Immigration Crackdown and Defence Spending Surge

The legislation allocates an estimated $350 billion for immigration and national security, advancing Trump’s pledge for the “largest mass deportation operation in American history.”

It funds:

  • 100,000 immigration detention beds

  • 10,000 new ICE officers (with $10,000 signing bonuses)

  • Increased Border Patrol staffing

  • New fees for asylum seekers and immigrants applying for legal status

On the defence front, the bill boosts Pentagon funding for shipbuilding, munitions, and adds $25 billion for the “Golden Dome” missile defense system. An additional $1 billion is designated for border-related military operations.

Medicaid Cuts and Restrictions

The final version includes significant healthcare changes. It provides $10 billion annually to rural hospitals over five years but also imposes long-term Medicaid reductions.

Key provisions:

  • Gradual reduction of provider taxes from 6% to 3.5% by 2032

  • A one-year ban on Medicaid reimbursements to abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood

  • New work requirements and frequent eligibility checks for certain adults

The Congressional Budget Office estimates these changes would result in 11.8 million people losing Medicaid coverage over the next decade.
