Ravichandran Ashwin Backs Gautam Gambhir’s White-Ball Coaching, Highlights ‘Fearless’ India T20 Identity

While Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as India’s coach has faced scrutiny in Tests—after a 408-run defeat to South Africa in Guwahati and a 2-0 home series whitewash—the story in white-ball cricket is markedly different. Gambhir, who led India to the 2025 Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup, has been quietly reshaping India’s limited-overs approach into a more aggressive, fearless brand of cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin recently emphasized this in a YouTube conversation with AB de Villiers, calling out Gambhir’s impact on the T20 setup. “I think GG, the white-ball coach, has already left a bit of a stamp,” Ashwin said, underlining the coach’s influence on India’s evolving white-ball mindset.

Ashwin highlighted that Gambhir’s philosophy isn’t just about individual players but about restructuring the team’s hierarchy. Drawing from his IPL experience with KKR and Lucknow, Gambhir has brought franchise-seasoned hitters into the national fold, using the league as both a talent pipeline and a proof of concept. “The IPL has thrown up some really stunning white-ball cricketers for India,” Ashwin added.

One player, Abhishek Sharma, exemplifies this bridge between league cricket and India colours. “That’s one cricketer I would love to watch out for again in the T20 format. His exploits around the format will also dictate where India go in the T20 World Cup,” Ashwin noted.

Beyond players, Ashwin praised Gambhir’s philosophy: a fearless, attacking approach that he has long envisioned for India. “Once upon a time, I played for India in the T20 format and always wanted the batters to play in this fashion. It doesn’t always happen when you’re playing. It has to happen when you’re retired. So, I’m glad it’s happened,” he said.

Ashwin also highlighted the balance Gambhir has built, combining attacking firepower with defensive control. “With Surya at the helm, that is a T20 side that would be feared on its day. Sure, that team will have its Achilles heel. But they look to have all bases covered with Bumrah’s defensive bowling.”

In the midst of India’s heated red-ball debate, Ashwin’s remarks effectively draw a clear line across Gambhir’s resume: while Tests are under scrutiny, his white-ball record already includes trophies, world-class talent, and a new-age, fearless playing style. For Ashwin, that legacy is undeniable.
