Rajpal Yadav Surrenders at Tihar Jail After Delhi HC Rejects Plea in Cheque Bounce Cases
Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered before authorities at Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Thursday after the Delhi High Court refused to extend the deadline for his surrender in connection with multiple cheque-bounce cases.
According to news agency PTI, a jail official said, “He surrendered before the jail authorities at 4 pm on Thursday. Now the jail authorities will follow the standard operating procedure.”
A day earlier, the High Court had declined Yadav’s request for additional time to comply with its order. His lawyer informed the court that the actor had arranged ₹50 lakh and sought a one-week extension to make the payment. However, the court rejected the plea.
“This Court cannot be expected to create special circumstances for any person merely because such a person belongs to a particular background or industry,” the court observed. “Leniency cannot be extended endlessly, especially when it is met with continued non-compliance.”
Yadav had been directed on February 2 to surrender by 4 pm on Wednesday.
Background of the Case
The case stems from a complaint filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd against Rajpal Yadav and his wife over several bounced cheques and alleged failure to repay outstanding dues.
In 2018, a Delhi magistrate’s court convicted the couple in the cheque-bounce cases and sentenced the actor to six months’ imprisonment. The conviction was upheld by a sessions court in 2019.
The Yadavs later challenged the verdict in the Delhi High Court. In June 2024, the court temporarily suspended the conviction and urged the actor to take “sincere and genuine measures” to explore an amicable settlement with the complainant.
However, on February 2 this year, the High Court ordered Yadav to surrender, noting that he had repeatedly violated undertakings given to the court regarding repayment.
