Raja Raghuvanshi Murder: Meghalaya Police Reveals 5 Chilling Details, Including Failed First Attempt
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Meghalaya Police, probing the gruesome murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, has travelled to Indore to investigate a possible financial motive behind the killing.
As part of the ongoing probe, Meghalaya Police also brought all the accused — including Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi — to Sohra (Cherrapunji), around 65 km from Shillong, where they recreated the crime scene under heavy security, according to a Hindustan Times report.
Background
Raja Raghuvanshi was brutally hacked to death on May 23 near the parking lot of the scenic Wei Sawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills district. His body was then dumped into a nearby gorge.
Raja and Sonam were on their honeymoon when the murder took place. Police say the killing was orchestrated by Sonam’s boyfriend, Raj Kushwaha, who allegedly hired three hitmen — Vishal, Anand, and Akash — to carry out the murder. While Raj is in custody, he did not travel to Meghalaya.
The reconstruction of the crime scene has revealed chilling new details:
5 Key Revelations from the Crime Scene Reenactment
1. Failed First Attempt
The initial attempt to kill Raja took place 3–4 km away from the Wei Sawdong parking lot but failed when he started his scooter to leave. The group then proceeded to the falls, where the murder was ultimately carried out.
2. Brutal Sequence of Attacks
Raja was attacked from behind by Vishal while Sonam stood in front of him. Vishal used both hands to deliver a powerful blow. This was followed by another strike from Anand, and a final blow by Akash, said East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem.
3. Weapons Used
The attackers used two machetes. One has been recovered, while a search is underway using metal detectors to locate the second one in the forested gorge area.
4. Cause of Death
SP Syiem confirmed that Raja died from the blows, not from falling into the gorge. After the fatal attack, his body was thrown into the ravine. Sonam reportedly stepped away once Raja began bleeding and screaming after the first blow.
5. Sonam’s Reaction
During the reenactment, Sonam reportedly expressed regret, though the police noted it was typical of what they see in criminal behavior. Whether she truly showed remorse remains uncertain, said SP Syiem.
The investigation is ongoing, with a focus now on uncovering any financial motive or transactions that may have played a role in the premeditated killing.
