Pro-Greenland Protesters Mock Trump’s MAGA Slogan with ‘Make America Go Away’ Caps
Red baseball caps spoofing Donald Trump’s iconic MAGA hats have emerged as a symbol of Danish and Greenlandic defiance against the US president’s threat to seize the Arctic territory.
The caps, emblazoned with the slogan “Make America Go Away”—a parody of Trump’s “Make America Great Again”—have gained traction on social media and at public protests, including a weekend demonstration held in freezing temperatures in Copenhagen.
As European governments rally behind Denmark, warning that threats to Greenland undermine Western security and Arctic stability, protesters have taken a far less diplomatic tone.
“I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States,” said 76-year-old Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, who wore one of the red caps at Saturday’s rally.
The mock hats were created by Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, a 58-year-old Copenhagen-based vintage clothing store owner. Initial batches released last year failed to attract attention, but demand surged after the Trump administration recently escalated its rhetoric over Greenland.
“When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realize this probably wasn’t a joke—it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality,” Tonnesen said. “So I thought: what can I do? Can I communicate in a funny way with a good message and unite Danes to show support for the people of Greenland?”
Sales jumped from a trickle to selling out within a single weekend. Tonnesen has since ordered “several thousand” more caps.
The original design featured a Danish wordplay: “Nu det NUUK!”—a twist on the phrase “Nu det nok” (“Now it’s enough”), replacing it with Nuuk, Greenland’s small capital.
At Saturday’s protest outside Copenhagen City Hall, demonstrators waved Danish and Greenlandic flags and held handmade signs mocking US claims over the territory, which is slightly larger than Saudi Arabia. Placards read “No Means No” and “Make America Smart Again.”
Despite the humor, participants stressed the seriousness of the message.
“I’m here to support the Greenlanders, who are going through a very hard time right now,” said Kristian Boye, 49, wearing one of the spoof hats. “They are being threatened with having their country invaded. I think it’s totally unacceptable.”
