Power Cuts in Eight Ukrainian Regions After Russian Strikes: Operator

Ukraine’s national energy provider announced on Tuesday that it had imposed emergency power cuts across eight regions after Russian attacks damaged critical infrastructure.

“Due to the difficult situation in the energy system caused by previous Russian strikes — in the regions of Sumy, Kharkiv, Poltava, Dnipropetrovsk, and partially in Kirovohrad, Kyiv, and Cherkasy — emergency shutdowns have been implemented,” Ukrenergo said in a statement.

The country’s main private electricity operator, DTEK, later said on Telegram that planned outages in Kyiv had been canceled.

Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s power facilities and railway network ahead of winter, sparking fears that millions could face freezing temperatures without electricity. Last week, blackouts were reported across several parts of the country, including the capital, where power was out for several hours.

President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of attempting to sow chaos through the attacks, which have also impacted Ukraine’s gas sector. Meanwhile, Kyiv continues to target oil refineries and hydrocarbon pipelines inside Russia with drone strikes — a strategy that has contributed to rising fuel prices there since the summer.
