PM Modi, Uruguay President Vow to Deepen Strategic and Economic Ties

Prime Minister Modi met with Uruguay’s President Yamandú Orsi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, where both leaders committed to advancing bilateral cooperation across a diverse strategic agenda.

The discussions included plans to collaborate on Digital Public Infrastructure, particularly India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Both sides highlighted potential for enabling digital payment interoperability, which could significantly boost financial inclusion and trade efficiency.

A major focus was placed on expanding bilateral trade and investment, especially by deepening India’s preferential trade ties with the MERCOSUR bloc. The leaders emphasized growth in key sectors such as chemicals and pharmaceuticals, aiming to unlock complementary opportunities through the India–MERCOSUR Preferential Trade Agreement.

Sectoral Cooperation in Technology, Defence & Railways

The agenda also covered collaboration in ICT and technology, railway systems, and defence cooperation, with both sides looking to align on mutual-strength projects and institutional linkages.

Health, Agriculture & Energy Collaborations

Prime Minister Modi and President Orsi discussed cooperation in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and energy. They reaffirmed commitment to deepen people-to-people linkages and broaden sectoral engagement, supported by capacity-building programs and technology transfer.

Global South Alliance & Security Solidarity

Modi emphasized the strategic importance of India–Uruguay ties for the Global South, underscoring Uruguay’s solidarity with India over recent security incidents. President Orsi’s condemnation of the Pahalgam terrorist attack was appreciated as a sign of shared commitment in combating terrorism.

Cultural Ties and People-to-People Exchanges

The growing popularity of Indian culture in Uruguay—highlighted by the increasing enthusiasm for Yoga—was noted as a strong foundation for bolstering cultural diplomacy and educational exchanges between the two nations.
