PM Modi to Visit Mizoram, Manipur on September 13 Amid Ethnic Violence Fallout

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mizoram and Manipur on Saturday, marking his first trip to the violence-hit northeastern state since ethnic clashes erupted in 2023.

Modi will begin his tour in Mizoram, where he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stones of projects worth over ₹9,000 crore in Aizawl, including the Bairabi–Sairang rail line that links the state to the national rail network.

He will then travel to Churachandpur in Manipur around 12:30 p.m. to launch development projects worth more than ₹7,300 crore and interact with internally displaced people. Later, in Imphal, he will inaugurate projects worth over ₹1,200 crore, including the new Manipur Police headquarters and a civil secretariat.

The visit comes amid criticism from opposition parties, who accused Modi of neglecting Manipur during the ethnic strife between Kuki and Meitei communities that has left over 260 people dead since May 2023. Congress leaders dismissed the trip as “symbolic,” while Kuki-Zo groups welcomed it as a “historic and rare occasion.”

Manipur remains under President’s Rule following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in February. Tight security and restrictions on public items have been imposed ahead of Modi’s arrival.
