PM Modi, Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Inaugurate ₹4,900-Crore Chennai Metro Stretch
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Sunday inaugurated the Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project, built at a cost of around ₹4,900 crore. Following the inauguration, the two leaders flagged off metro services and travelled together on a metro train.
The newly opened stretch is part of Corridor 4 of Phase II and is expected to improve connectivity between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre, while reducing daily commuting time for passengers.
Chennai Metro Phase II: 11 Elevated Stations Added
The newly inaugurated section covers approximately 15 km and features 11 elevated metro stations. A key feature of the corridor is its 3.7-km double-decker structure, designed to accommodate multiple transport routes within the same infrastructure.
The stretch also incorporates advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless train operations, reflecting the Chennai Metro Rail Limited’s broader push towards modern urban transport infrastructure.
The new connection is expected to ease road congestion, improve access to key residential and commercial areas, and provide commuters with a more efficient alternative to road travel.

These projects are expected to improve road connectivity, facilitate smoother movement of passengers and freight, and strengthen links between important towns and economic centres in Tamil Nadu.
Five Amrit Stations To Be Dedicated

Port Projects To Strengthen Maritime Infrastructure
Modi is also scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for several port-related projects in Tamil Nadu.
The initiatives are intended to strengthen maritime infrastructure, expand cargo-handling capacity and improve logistics efficiency. The projects involving Chennai Port, Kamarajar Port and V O Chidambaranar Port are expected to support freight movement and improve the efficiency of maritime trade.
PM Modi To Attend School’s Golden Jubilee
Later in the day, Modi is scheduled to participate in the golden jubilee celebrations of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai.
