Narendra Modi on Thursday held a series of calls with leaders of Qatar, France, Jordan, Oman and Malaysia, expressing concern over the escalating situation in West Asia and urging urgent steps to reduce tensions. He also condemned attacks targeting energy infrastructure in the region.

In separate conversations, Modi stressed the need for dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace, security and stability, while underlining the importance of ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Outreach to key partners

During his call with Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Modi expressed solidarity with Doha and strongly condemned attacks on regional energy facilities. He also thanked Qatar for supporting the Indian community and reiterated the need for stability in the Gulf.

Speaking with King Abdullah II, Modi emphasised that attacks on energy infrastructure risk further escalation and called for diplomacy to restore normalcy. He also appreciated Jordan’s role in facilitating the safe return of Indians stranded in the region.

In his conversation with Emmanuel Macron, both leaders agreed on the urgency of de-escalation and continued coordination to promote peace and stability.

Modi also held a “productive conversation” with Haitham bin Tariq, reiterating India’s firm stance against any violation of Oman’s sovereignty and acknowledging its efforts in assisting evacuations.

During his call with Anwar Ibrahim, the two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to resolving the crisis through dialogue and diplomacy.

Rising tensions in the region

The diplomatic outreach comes as Iran intensified attacks on oil and gas infrastructure across the Gulf following an Israeli strike on the South Pars gas field, the world’s largest, shared with Qatar.

The situation has drawn sharp responses globally. Donald Trump warned of severe retaliation if Iran continues its attacks, while Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran must be prevented from advancing its nuclear and missile programmes.

With energy security and regional stability at stake, India’s outreach reflects growing global efforts to contain the crisis and prevent further escalation.
