Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, January 26, laid a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, leading the nation in paying homage to soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, as India celebrated its 77th Republic Day.

The prime minister arrived at the memorial in the morning, where he offered floral tributes and observed a moment of silence in honour of the fallen heroes. The ceremony traditionally marks the beginning of Republic Day events and precedes the main celebrations in the national capital.

Later in the day, attention will turn to Kartavya Path, where the grand Republic Day parade is scheduled to begin at 10:30 am.

Theme: ‘150 Years of Vande Mataram’

This year’s Republic Day celebrations are centred on the theme “150 Years of Vande Mataram”. The parade will showcase India’s development journey, rich cultural heritage, and growing military strength.

The event will feature an elaborate defence display, cultural performances, and colourful tableaux presented by states and central ministries.

Chief guests from the European Council are also expected to attend, adding a significant diplomatic dimension to the celebrations.

Significance of Republic Day

India observes Republic Day annually on January 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution, which came into force in 1950, formally establishing the country as a sovereign republic.
