PM Modi Meets Wang Yi, Says India-China Ties Making ‘Steady Progress’
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Delhi, highlighting that India-China relations are making “steady progress.”
“Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have advanced steadily, guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities,” Modi said on X. He added that he looked forward to meeting Xi Jinping again in Tianjin later this month during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. “Stable, predictable and constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional and global peace and prosperity,” he noted.
During the meeting, Wang Yi conveyed a personal message and an invitation from President Xi for the SCO Summit in China. Modi also stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity on the border, reiterating India’s commitment to a fair and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.
Ahead of his talks with Modi, Wang met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, where discussions covered de-escalation, delimitation and boundary issues. On Monday, he also held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, focusing on bilateral, regional and global matters. India raised concerns about terrorism, including cross-border terrorism, with the MEA noting that Wang Yi agreed counterterrorism must remain a “highest priority.”
Modi is scheduled to travel to China on August 31 for the SCO Summit, marking his first visit to the country since 2018. His engagement with Xi in Tianjin will be the second in less than a year, following their meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan in 2024.
