PM Modi Arrives in Canada for G7 Summit, First Visit in a Decade
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kananaskis on Tuesday to attend the G7 Summit, marking his first visit to Canada in a decade and his sixth consecutive participation in the high-profile gathering of world leaders.
Modi’s visit comes as part of a three-nation tour and follows his stop in Cyprus. He arrived in Canada on Monday evening (local time) at the invitation of newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Key Global Issues on the Agenda
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), discussions at the G7 Summit—scheduled for June 16-17—will center on pressing global concerns, including energy security, technology and innovation, with particular focus on the AI-energy nexus and quantum technologies.
“At the Summit, the Prime Minister will exchange views with leaders of G7 countries, other invited outreach countries, and Heads of International Organisations on crucial global issues,” the MEA said in a statement.
Bilateral Talks on the Sidelines
Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold multiple bilateral meetings during the summit. These engagements come just over a month after India’s Operation Sindoor, which targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam attacks.
India-Canada Relations: Signs of Reset
Modi’s visit also signals a potential thaw in India-Canada relations, which had sharply deteriorated following Canada’s allegations last year linking India to the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar—claims strongly denied by New Delhi.
The invitation extended by Prime Minister Carney to Modi is widely seen as a gesture toward repairing bilateral ties. In recent months, security officials from both countries have resumed contact, and discussions are underway to appoint new high commissioners in Ottawa and New Delhi.
The MEA described India and Canada as “vibrant democracies” and expressed hope that the upcoming meeting between Modi and Carney will provide an important opportunity to exchange views and explore pathways to reset ties.
