PM Modi and President Trump Take Initial Steps to Mend Bilateral Ties

India and the United States have taken initial steps to mend their relationship after tensions over trade deals and Russian oil, with both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump reaffirming their personal friendship and the strength of bilateral ties.

PM Modi reciprocated Trump’s assurance that he will “always be friends” with India’s leader, emphasizing that the US-India strategic partnership remains strong. Following this, officials from both sides are expected to work toward a mutually beneficial trade agreement.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underlined the importance PM Modi attaches to ties with the US, reflecting New Delhi’s interest in smoothing over recent frictions. Trump also made clear that he does not see India drifting toward China, citing their recent meetings and joint press engagements.

The two leaders’ public statements suggest that previous tensions from Washington may now ease, potentially paving the way for direct conversations and official-level coordination to solidify ties.

After a June 17 phone call with Trump, PM Modi posted on X: “Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump’s sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

According to officials in New Delhi, the statement reflects a strategic patience from Raisina Hill, awaiting the Washington discourse to settle and ensuring that India’s engagements with China and Russia are not misinterpreted.

Preparations for a trade deal continue, with India signaling that disagreements on trade were merely temporary, and both nations remain committed to advancing cooperation as natural global partners.
