PM Modi, Amit Shah Mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, Recall 1947 Tragedy
As India observed Partition Horrors Remembrance Day on Thursday, August 14, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to those who suffered during the 1947 partition, recalling the displacement, violence, and loss endured by millions.
In a post on X, PM Modi said the day honours “the grit” of those who faced “unimaginable loss” yet rebuilt their lives and achieved remarkable milestones. He called it a reminder of India’s “enduring responsibility to strengthen the bonds of harmony” that hold the country together.
Home Minister Shah, in his post, described partition as a “tragedy” that caused “violence, exploitation, and atrocities,” blaming the Congress party for dividing the nation. He said the country would “never forget” the pain of partition and offered condolences to its victims.
Observed every August 14—Independence Day eve—Partition Horrors Remembrance Day commemorates those who died or were displaced during the partition of British India, which also led to the creation of Pakistan, celebrated there as Independence Day.
