PIB Fact Check Debunks Viral Claim: US Did Not Use Indian Airspace in ‘Operation Midnight Hammer’

The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit has officially dismissed widespread social media claims alleging that the United States used Indian airspace during its recent military action against Iran, codenamed ‘Operation Midnight Hammer’.

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and the proliferation of unverified content online, a series of posts on various platforms claimed that American aircraft flew over Indian territory en route to Iran. These claims quickly went viral, prompting official clarification from the Indian government.

PIB Labels Claim as “FAKE”

In a strongly worded statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, the official PIB Fact Check account declared:

“Indian Airspace was NOT used by the United States during Operation Midnight Hammer. The claim being circulated on social media is FAKE.”

The clarification aims to curb misinformation and prevent unwarranted speculation regarding India’s involvement or cooperation in the high-stakes military development.

Social Media and Misinformation

The false narrative reportedly originated from unverified posts, many of which featured manipulated flight path images or audio clips alleging military overflight. Within hours, the content spread widely across social platforms, including X, WhatsApp, and Facebook.

Officials at the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of External Affairs confirmed there had been no formal communication or request from the US to use Indian airspace for any such operation, nor was any overflight permission granted in recent days for military action linked to Iran.

Importance of Verification in Crisis Reporting

The incident highlights the growing role of government fact-checking agencies like PIB in dispelling dangerous misinformation—especially in geopolitically sensitive scenarios. With India maintaining a neutral and non-aligned position in several international conflicts, any misrepresentation of its strategic actions can have serious diplomatic repercussions.

Cybersecurity and foreign affairs experts have also flagged this as a case of deliberate misinformation, possibly aimed at misleading citizens or disrupting diplomatic discourse.

Public Advisory

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified claims, particularly during times of geopolitical tension. Citizens are encouraged to rely on official channels like PIB Fact Check for accurate and timely information.

As global events unfold rapidly, especially in volatile regions like West Asia, the Indian government continues to monitor both airspace and the digital information ecosystem closely. The PIB’s swift response in busting this claim underscores India’s commitment to transparency, strategic autonomy, and factual reporting.
