Independent MP from Purnea, Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, was arrested by Patna Police late Friday night following high drama at his residence in connection with a 1995 forgery case, officials said.

The arrest came after a court issued a property attachment warrant due to Yadav’s repeated absence from court hearings.

According to the complaint, the MP allegedly fraudulently occupied a house to run his office. The case, registered at the Gardanibagh police station, was filed by house owner Vinod Bihari Lal, who claimed that his property was rented through deception and later used as an MP’s office without his knowledge.

“Action has been taken in compliance with the court order. A trial was underway, and the MP failed to appear on the scheduled date,” City SP Bhanu Pratap said.

High-Voltage Midnight Arrest

A police team of around 50 personnel reached Yadav’s Mandiri residence at about 10:30 pm and arrested him around 12:15 am. Police officials initially informed him that they were present to execute a court order.

Yadav reportedly resisted arrest, asking officers to return in the morning. As tensions rose, his supporters gathered outside the residence, raised slogans against the administration, and demanded to see arrest warrants. Some scuffles were also reported.

The MP alleged that a police inspector arrived in civilian clothes carrying a revolver, and claimed the arrest was part of a conspiracy against him.

“This is a conspiracy to kill me. I will not go anywhere at night. The court had called me on Saturday, and I was ready to appear,” Yadav said.

Police Reject Allegations

Around 12:30 am, police took Yadav to the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) for a medical examination before placing him in custody at the Gardanibagh police station.

City SP Bhanu Pratap Singh said Yadav would be produced before the court and further action would be taken as per judicial directions.

“Police are authorised to arrest any person at any time if there is a warrant or attachment order. We have followed all legal procedures,” Singh said.

Dismissing allegations of a conspiracy, the SP added, “We are only doing our duty. The law has been fully complied with.”

Court Proceedings

The MP-MLA court had earlier issued attachment orders against three accused, including Yadav, in the case related to fraudulent renting and alleged intimidation of the house owner. Arrest warrants and public notices had also been issued against the accused for non-appearance.

The court has fixed Saturday as the next date of hearing in the case.
