OpenAI Sets Up India Office, Kicks Off Local Recruitment
OpenAI announced plans on Thursday to open its first India office in New Delhi later this year, underscoring the country’s growing role as one of the company’s largest and fastest-growing markets.
The move aligns with the government’s IndiaAI mission and will allow OpenAI to better serve India’s millions of students, developers, and professionals who use its tools. CEO Sam Altman said India “has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader,” pointing to the nation’s tech talent, developer ecosystem, and government support.
New data released by the company shows:
-
India is ChatGPT’s second-largest market after the US.
-
Weekly active users have quadrupled in the past year.
-
India ranks among the top five global developer markets.
-
The country has the world’s largest population of student users on ChatGPT.
The New Delhi office will focus on building local partnerships with government, businesses, and academic institutions, while also developing India-specific features. Recent launches include ChatGPT Go, a low-cost subscription tier priced at ₹399/month with UPI payments, and expanded Indic language support in GPT-5.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the decision, saying it reflects India’s leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. OpenAI also confirmed plans to host its first Education Summit and Developer Day in India this year.
