Novak Djokovic Dismisses Claim He Has Committed to 2025 ATP Finals, Says Decision Will Come After Athens Tournament
Novak Djokovic has pushed back against comments made by Italian Tennis Federation president Angelo Binaghi, who recently claimed the 24-time Grand Slam champion had confirmed his participation in the 2025 ATP Finals. Djokovic, currently competing at the Hellenic Championship in Athens, said no such decision has been made.
“I don’t know where he got that information from. Definitely not from me or my team,” Djokovic said after defeating Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in straight sets in his opening match. “I will decide at the end of this tournament.”
Djokovic admitted he entered the match with added tension, given Tabilo had beaten him twice on clay in the past two seasons. “I really tried to draw the energy from the crowd,” he said.
Djokovic bristles at retirement question — again
The Serbian star also showed visible frustration when asked yet again about retirement plans, a topic he’s had to address repeatedly in recent months.
“Why do I need to get this question all the time?” he responded. “I think I’ve earned the right to play for as long as I really want.”
Referencing fellow veteran Stan Wawrinka, Djokovic added, “I’ve heard his interviews and thought he was absolutely right when he said: ‘Hey guys, leave me alone. Let me play, let me enjoy myself.’”
Djokovic said retirement has crossed his mind “a few times” but insisted it is not something he is actively considering.
“At the end of the day I’ve decided to simply play on my own terms — to play where I want to play, not where others think I should,” he said.
For now, Djokovic remains focused on Athens — and says any decision about Turin, or his long-term future, will come only when he’s ready.
