Nicholas Pooran Announces Shock Retirement from International Cricket at 29
Former West Indies T20I captain Nicholas Pooran has stunned the cricket world with his unexpected decision to retire from international cricket at the age of 29.
The left-handed batter, who recently played for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2025 season, confirmed his retirement through an emotional post on Instagram. Describing the decision as “difficult,” Pooran expressed that it was a “privilege” to have led the West Indies team and represented his country.
Pooran’s retirement marks the end of a significant international career, during which he played 61 T20Is and 106 ODIs, amassing over 4,000 runs across both formats. He also holds the distinction of being the highest run-scorer for the West Indies in international T20 cricket.
This decision comes just days after Pooran had requested Cricket West Indies (CWI) not to consider him for the upcoming white-ball series against England, citing a need for rest. His sudden departure from the international scene is especially surprising given the T20 World Cup is only eight months away, scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka.
Pooran’s Full Statement on Retirement
In his statement, Pooran wrote, “After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies.”
“Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart,” Pooran added.
A Journey of Highs and Lows
Pooran made his international debut in 2016 in a T20I against Pakistan in Dubai and later made his ODI debut in 2019 against England. He was part of the West Indies squad for the T20 World Cup in 2022, and just a few months later, he was appointed as the white-ball captain. However, after the team’s disappointing T20 World Cup campaign in Australia, Pooran stepped down as captain.
His last appearance for the West Indies came in December 2024 during a T20I against Bangladesh in Kingstown, Jamaica. Pooran scored 15 runs off 10 balls in that match, marking the conclusion of his international career.
A Heartfelt Farewell
In his farewell message, Pooran expressed his gratitude to the fans, family, and teammates who supported him throughout his career. “To the fans – thank you for your unwavering love. You lifted me in the tough moments and celebrated the good ones with unmatched passion. To my family, friends, and teammates – thank you for walking this journey with me. Your belief and support carried me through it all,” he wrote.
“Though this international chapter of my career closes, my love for West Indies Cricket will never fade. I wish the team and the region nothing but success and strength for the road ahead,” Pooran concluded.
