Newsom vs. Trump: California Governor to Sue Over National Guard Deployment Amid LA Protests

5

The escalating feud between California Governor Gavin Newsom and former President Donald Trump has reached new heights, as Newsom announced plans to sue the Trump administration. The legal challenge follows Trump’s decision to send around 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to ongoing anti-ICE protests in the city.

The protests began in early June after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials launched a series of raids targeting undocumented immigrants. In an effort to curb the unrest, Trump ordered the National Guard to support law enforcement in Los Angeles, accusing local leaders of failing to maintain order.

The governor took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), where he sharply criticized Trump’s actions, accusing him of “flaming the fires” of the protests. Newsom further argued that the president’s move to federalize the National Guard was illegal, warning that the order could be used as a precedent for intervention in other states. “We’re suing him,” Newsom declared.

Newsom’s legal stance is supported by other prominent Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, who have condemned Trump’s use of the National Guard. California officials fear that the deployment will only make the situation in Los Angeles worse.

Newsom’s Strong Words:

“Donald Trump has manufactured a crisis and is inflaming conditions. If he can’t solve it, we will,” Newsom wrote. “To the bad actors fueling Trump’s flames, California will hold you accountable.”

Trump Strikes Back:

Trump fired back, accusing Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of mishandling the protests. On Truth Social, Trump blasted the pair, claiming they should apologize for their “horrible job” in managing the unrest. He dismissed the protesters as “troublemakers” and “insurrectionists,” insisting that the protesters were not engaging in legitimate demonstrations but rather causing chaos. Trump also took aim at the protesters’ refusal to wear masks, adding fuel to the debate over public health guidelines.

The Roots of the LA Protests:

The protests, which began on June 6, were sparked by a series of ICE immigration raids that led to the arrests of dozens of undocumented individuals across the city. Protesters took to the streets, blocking highways and clashing with law enforcement. Tensions further escalated over the weekend, with police using tear gas, rubber bullets, and flash-bangs to disperse crowds.

As the unrest grew, Trump decided to deploy the National Guard, stating that local leaders had “lost control” of the situation. Critics, including Newsom, argue that the president’s actions are only exacerbating the crisis rather than resolving it.

The deployment of the National Guard and the ongoing protests have sparked a broader debate about immigration policies and the role of the federal government in addressing civil unrest. The legal and political battle between Newsom and Trump shows no signs of slowing down as the situation in Los Angeles continues to unfold.
