Neeraj Chopra Wears Many Hats as Host of NC Classic: A Champion On and Off the Field

Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra is proving that his prowess extends well beyond the javelin field. As the host and driving force behind the inaugural NC Classic, a premier javelin event named after him, Chopra has taken on multiple roles — from drafting personalised letters for participants to shortlisting musical performers — all in a bid to elevate the athlete experience.

What began as an idea to promote javelin and field sports in India has grown into a national-level track and field showcase, and Chopra is at its centre — not just as a sporting icon but also as a meticulous organiser, promoter, and motivator.

A Champion’s Personal Touch

Neeraj Chopra’s personal involvement in the NC Classic has gone far beyond lending his name. Athletes competing in the event have received handwritten welcome notes, penned by Chopra himself. These notes are meant to make athletes — both Indian and international — feel respected and recognised.

“I know what it feels like to travel to a new place and compete. A warm welcome goes a long way,” Chopra said. “I wanted every participant to know that their effort is seen and appreciated.”

He has also personally reviewed logistics, approved merchandise designs, and vetted the list of musical acts scheduled to perform at the opening ceremony. “I now have a new-found respect for event organisers. There’s so much to manage — from athlete hospitality and timing systems to dealing with sponsors and local authorities,” he admitted.

Athlete-Led Vision for Athletics

The NC Classic, hosted in Chandigarh this year, is India’s first athlete-led elite javelin event and seeks to raise both the profile of Indian athletics and the standard of sports event management in the country. The tournament features national and international javelin stars, aiming to inspire young throwers and build a new sports culture around track and field disciplines.

Athletics Federation of India officials say Chopra’s active involvement has brought professionalism and authenticity to the event. “Athletes trust him because he understands their needs. His presence alone brings energy and credibility,” said one AFI official.

Setting a New Standard

Unlike traditional events where sportspeople play little to no role in organisation, Chopra’s hands-on approach represents a new model of athlete engagement. From ensuring proper nutrition in the athlete dining hall to recommending physiotherapists be stationed at the warm-up zones, he has infused the event with insights drawn from his global experience.

Chopra has even offered mentorship sessions for junior javelin athletes participating in the meet — discussing technique, recovery, and mental preparation. These informal interactions are being viewed as a highlight of the tournament.

Inspiring the Next Generation

At the launch ceremony, Chopra reiterated his vision: “I want India to not just celebrate champions once every four years. We must build systems, events, and environments that produce champions every year. The NC Classic is just one step in that direction.”

His long-term goal is to see the event evolve into a multi-nation annual fixture, putting Indian athletics firmly on the global map and nurturing the next generation of medal winners.

With the NC Classic, Neeraj Chopra has taken a bold step — transforming from a world-class athlete to an architect of India’s athletics future. His commitment, humility, and attention to detail reflect a deeper purpose: not just to win medals, but to create a lasting legacy. As fans cheer his throws, they are now also applauding his leadership behind the scenes.
