Mumbai Rains Live: Andheri Subway Submerged, Schools and Colleges Closed Today
All schools and colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will remain closed on Tuesday, 19 August, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Monday evening, as the city continues to reel under heavy rainfall and waterlogging.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Palghar, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Mumbai recorded 177 mm of rain in just six to eight hours on Monday, with further downpours and high tides forecast over the next two to three days.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis urged residents to step out only if necessary. “Half of Maharashtra’s districts are under red or orange alert until August 21. In Mumbai, several areas are waterlogged, local trains are delayed, and traffic is slow, though metro services remain unaffected,” he said.
IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory warning of waterlogged routes to the airport, urging passengers to leave early and check flight updates via its app or website, as delays in arrivals and departures are expected.
Heavy rain has already caused significant disruption across the region:
-
A landslide in Kalyan damaged four homes, though no injuries were reported.
-
Roads in Thane, Palghar and Navi Mumbai were inundated, leading to massive traffic jams.
-
Fourteen locations in Mumbai were waterlogged, though traffic movement resumed at 12.
-
In Nanded district, a cloudburst led to the rescue of 206 people by NDRF and army teams.
Authorities have cautioned that flooding and transport delays could continue through the week.
