Mumbai, Nearby Districts on Orange Alert as Heavy Rains Lash City; Andheri Subway Shut
Mumbai and its surrounding regions continued to reel under heavy rainfall on Wednesday as the monsoon intensified across Maharashtra. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts, warning of moderate to heavy showers.
IMD Issues Orange Alert for Six Maharashtra Districts
The IMD has placed the following districts under an orange alert for July 24:
-
Mumbai
-
Raigad
-
Thane
-
Ratnagiri
-
Sindhudurg
-
Palghar
According to the forecast, these areas are likely to witness intense rainfall throughout the day. Localised flooding and traffic disruption are possible, especially in low-lying zones.
In Mumbai, consistent showers were reported in parts of Ghatkopar and surrounding areas, with forecasts indicating continued rainfall at least until 10 AM.
Waterlogging, Train Delays Reported
Rain-triggered waterlogging has led to significant disruption in the city. The Andheri Subway has been closed for vehicular traffic due to nearly 1.5 feet of water accumulation.
“Due to 1–1.5 ft water logging, the Andheri Subway is closed. Traffic has been diverted via Gokhale Bridge and Thackeray Bridge,” the Mumbai Traffic Police said in an update on X (formerly Twitter).
On the rail front:
-
Central and Harbour line services are facing delays, according to the mIndicator app.
-
Western line trains, however, continue to run on time.
More Showers Expected Across Maharashtra This Week
The IMD has forecast continued rainfall over the next few days, with districts like Pune, Satara, and Raigad remaining under alert.
Between now and July 28, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over:
-
Konkan and Goa
-
Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra
-
Parts of Marathwada
Light to moderate showers are also expected across broader regions in Western India during this period.
