Muhammad Yunus Mourns Death of Khaleda Zia, Calls Her a ‘Great Guardian of the Nation’
Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness.
In a condolence message, Yunus said that with the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, the nation had lost a “great guardian.” “I am deeply saddened and grief-stricken by her death,” he said, paying tribute to one of Bangladesh’s most influential political leaders.
Recalling her political legacy, Yunus said Khaleda Zia was not merely the leader of a political party but an important chapter in the country’s history. He noted that earlier this month the government had declared her a Very Important Person of the State in recognition of her contributions, long political struggle and the deep public sentiment attached to her leadership.
The Chief Adviser said Khaleda Zia’s role in the struggle to establish democracy, uphold a multi-party political culture and protect the rights of the people would be remembered forever. Through what he described as her uncompromising leadership, Yunus said the nation was repeatedly freed from undemocratic conditions.
Despite political differences, Yunus said her political journey was driven by national interest and people-oriented leadership. “With her death, the country has lost an experienced and proven stateswoman,” he said.
Khaleda Zia made history as Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister following the restoration of parliamentary democracy and later served a second term from 2001 to 2006.
In his message, Yunus recalled that Khaleda Zia led the movement to restore democracy against autocracy and said her strong leadership played a decisive role in ending the nine-year-long rule of former military ruler HM Ershad.
Highlighting her governance initiatives, Yunus said she introduced free education and stipends for girls, and noted that she was never defeated in any election she contested. He described Khaleda Zia as a symbol of struggle and resistance who stood against what he termed the fascist rule of Sheikh Hasina.
The Chief Adviser also said that due to her political success, Khaleda Zia became a victim of extreme political vengeance.
Concluding his message, Yunus appealed to the people of Bangladesh to remain calm and pay their respects to the late leader, honouring her legacy and contributions to the nation.
